We Became Online Entrepreneurs Because of My Son’s Autism

This is the unlikely story of how the diagnosis of autism opened the door to a world of magic and adventure for my son and me. The actions we took to meet this challenge created an incomparable bond between us.

My son Jakob was diagnosed with autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, commonly known as ADHD, and anxiety. However, he wasn’t diagnosed right away. At the beginning, I had no idea how to help him and I was absolutely desperate to make his life better. So, I started with the only thing I knew how to create, a homemade blanket for his second birthday. This first item, which was designed to help what I perceived as my son’s special needs, eventually led to an online store. Today, our store sells toys created for children like Jakob and other children with special needs.

Made By Us has developed a unique collection of sensory toys that are specifically hand crafted to support a child's development using multiple methods of stimulation simultaneously right from newborn all the way up to the age of 12. The link between cognitive behaviour and sensory stimulation from early age has proven to be crucial for children’s further development. That is why we collaborate with experts and occupational therapists to continuously improve our toys. 

Children with special needs require extra attention, affecting the quality of life of many families and society in general. The parents may be affected by worries of helplessness and guilt, while at the same time siblings may experience a great deal of responsibility for themselves as they find parents spending more resources and time on their diagnosed brother/sister.

The solution consists in gravure therapy and sensory simulation, respectively, designed as toys / teddy bears. The new thing about our solution is that our products are designed for children with a focus on play. The products are designed and developed so that they are fun and entertaining and that the children do not feel ashamed by having them in their everyday lives.

We believe in producing natural handmade toys that improve the sensory skills and imagination of children, without compromising environmental impact or sustainable production. All of our toys are crafted using organic buckwheat husks, which replaces the usual synthetic stuffing corporate toy brands use.
